STEM… What is it? Why does it matter? How do we “do” it?
STEM is all around us. It is essentially the exploration of SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS. We can probably all agree with the research that suggests that in our ever changing world, STEM skills are becoming increasingly essential.
Despite an influx of special programs and curricula, we don’t actually need to “do” STEM… it happens every day! When children play, they explore these concepts.
What we need to “do”, is to let it happen. Let children play, explore and discover in rich environments. Our role in STEM is to see the learning and make it visible, to document the thinking and understandings.
Why did we create these cards?
Our Inspiration and Discussion Card sets have become a very popular resource for services, due to their high visual appeal and their simple, informative format that encourages reflection and discussion between educators.
As you use these cards, you will rediscover STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) through fresh eyes-just as we explored as children.
We have created these cards to inspire discussion, thought and reflection.
These updated cards cover more than just identifying STEM. We have also included tips for environments, resources and interactions that encourage children's natural exploration of STEM. This set includes:
- STEM and the EYLF
- Science
- Technology
- Engineering
- Math
- The Importance if Time
- The Importance of Revisiting
- What about Science Experiments?
- Making STEM Learning Visible
Each card provides information, reflective prompts and beautiful photographs.
What can you do with them?
This set of 9 high quality, wipe clean, colour cards are approximately 10cm x 12cm, and will come ring bound for durability and ease of use.
We've visited services who have hung theirs on a hook in the room, or in the staff room. You could also:
- Make them available in your programming/documentation area
- Work through one card at each team meeting - use them to spark discussion within the team
